As the US version of Alternators lacked specific fiction or character bios, we can only look to Japan's version of Alternators, Binaltech, which came with character cards and bio information by Hirofumi Ichikawa, the information presented here is from the English translation by Doug Dlin.
Alternator #21 was none other than Optimus Prime, rumor was that in the early design phase the Dodge Ram was intended to be a different character entirely but was made Optimus Prime at Takara's request.
The reasoning behind this was that in Japan there is very little or no market for pickup trucks and few are seen on the roads. The story goes that "Convoy" would sell because he is Convoy even though the Japanese did not buy many pickup trucks.
Subsequently, the figure was never sold in the Binaltech line as Convoy, though it did later make an appearance in "kiss players".
The mold finally made it's Binaltech appearance as Black Convoy, a Wonder Festival 2007 exclusive figure sporting a color scheme similar to Alternators Nemesis Prime.
